Cocoon Review
Written by QM
When I was offered the chance to try this phone and review it, in all honesty, I wasn’t expecting much. I even explained my technophobe status to Mr O2 but was not put off and sent me one anyway.
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
I have not yet ventured into the music side of the phone therefore I will be writing my views based on ease of use and aesthetics.
Firstly what struck me was the fact that is was white. Obvious I know, but my first reaction on seeing the lack of hue was that it’d get dirty very easily. That turned out to be quite true, since it got a mark on it after I’d been handling it for a few hours (bit of advice - don’t use the Cocoon whilst eating Wotsits. That’s a bad idea).
I also didn’t like the fact the camera lense was on the front, which for me slightly ruined the overall clean, minimal effect that could have been achieved had the lense been elsewhere on the phone (not sure where it could have gone though). I was really quite impressed by the LCD on the front, which I didn’t expect to see at all. It’s quite hard to see in daylight though, but is none the less a visually impressive little addition and is actually a great work around for seeing caller ID’s and incoming messages when the phone is closed.
The phone itself is reassuringly sturdy, especially since it’s a flip top, which always seem rather flimsy on other phones. That’s a very important factor for me as phones get damaged in handbags rather easily.
Once I started investigating the phone’s usage, I found it very easy. I generally rate ease-of-use on whether I need to use the manual, which so far I haven’t had to do. I did however find it difficult to locate the area where you change the ringtones. I eventually found it but it could have perhaps been made a bit more obvious.
I also seem to get a better signal than I had on my previous phone, even though I have been on O2 for both phones.
The phone certainly comes with some cool extras, even though I personally haven’t tried them out. I think with this phone I would attempt to download music onto it - something I have never been convinced enough to do with other phones I’ve owned and I think this is because of the overall design, which looks less like a phone and more like an MP3 player. (I personally think it looks silly listening to music on a phone).
To be really nit picky, I’d say I found it slightly uncomfortable against my ear when I was using it and the callers voice is quite quiet, but I have no doubt there will be a setting to adjust the callers volume which I have yet to find.
The big question is: would I buy this phone if I hadn’t been sent it? The answer would be yes…and no. I’d initially say no on the basis of the colour. But if I’d borrowed someone else’s and used it, I’d definitely buy it, as the ease of use and general build of the phone out-ways any doubt I have about the colour. I’d rate this phone with an 7.5/10 and if they released it in another colour I would buy it as my next phone.
