Cocoon and co-ordination
Written by Peter Semple
I began using the Cocoon last week, and – while I’m still getting used to the UI – am definitely enjoying the experience thus far. I was contemplating the (polarising?) looks of the phone this weekend, and it got me thinking:
- Because the handset has such striking looks, and because its styling is such a big part of its identity, there’s a real opportunity to co-ordinate it with other complementary designs.
- I’ve been collecting trainers for about 7 years now so I went looking through the vaults to see if I could find a pair that would co-ordinate perfectly with the Cocoon…
I sifted through a few potentials that matched the handset in terms of being predominantly white, having blue and black detailing, etc, before deciding on the Columbia Blue Air Jordan XI (the picture is stolen from ebay, as unfortunately I don’t have a good enough shot of my pair.

- The Air Jordan XI has a rounded toe (inherited in part from its predecessor the Jordan X) and that panel of the shoe is white patent leather: this mimics the smooth design of the Cocoon, as well as its clean finish…
- The Columbia Blue accents marry pretty well with the LED colouring; there’s also the black sockliner which co-ordinates with the black interior of the handset.
- The icing on the cake though, is that the Columbia Jordan XI has what’s know amongst collectors as an “ice” sole: made from a clear/transparent rubber, allowing detail underneath (graphics on the outsole, etc) to be seen through it. I figured that’s conceptually a pretty good fit with the Cocoon…
The AJXI was the shoe Michael wore when he returned from retiring the first time for the 1995 season. It was also famously featured in the classic “Space Jam” film with Bugs Bunny: a special colour of the shoe was made for MJ to wear on court with the Warner Bros cartoon characters.
Does anyone else have interesting examples of comparative design with the Cocoon?
(Sorry for the trainer geekery)
